Gabrielle Avancini’ is a Brazilian photographer based in London. Her work blends personal experience with a deep exploration of identity, culture and community. Drawing from Brazil’s rich history and diverse social landscape, Avancini’s series, such as Motherland and Queer Love, address themes of cultural preservation, love, and resistance.
Through her lens, she documents marginalised communities and complex social issues, in an attempt to contribute to broader universal conversations about heritage, identity and the struggle for recognition. She achieves this through careful consideration of her projects throughout their development and curation with a purposeful blend of photographs and ideas. It is an approach that places the subject matter at the forefront of the decision making process.
Avancini’s photographs empower the subject in a way that maintains and conveys the realism of their situation whilst ensuring that they are not simply reduced to passive victims. They are the enduring protagonists in their own stories.
