Baianos

I first went to Salvador in 2015 and had not yet learnt the importance of having your camera with you at all times.

I was fortunate enough to return, this time prepared.

With its deep roots in the history of Brazil, Salvador, and the state of Bahia more widely, is almost a spiritual pilgrimage for Brazilians. Walking through Pelourinho, the city’s historic centre, I was once again met with an atmosphere that pulled me into the heartbeat of the city.

Baianas, with their flowing dresses, spun and danced to the beat of the drums that echoed through the narrow streets, and the city was humming with energy as preparations were underway for Carnival.

Salvador is a city of music, life and colour. I was grateful to finally be able to capture these themes and share a snapshot of Salvador and the spirit of Bahia.
